Treatment Values and Experience

Dr Wes Miles is a Specialist Radiation Oncologist, who has developed a strong belief in Evidence-Based Medicine and Best Practice Cancer Therapies.

Background

An interest in Radiation Oncology evolved following a summer scholarship with Dr Jeremy Millar at the Alfred Hospital's William Buckland Radiotherapy Centre. This evolved into a Research Assistant role, the development of the Alfred's Prostate Cancer database and the basis for mutliple, internationally published journal articles. Exposure to this model of care, as well as to new and exciting therapies, such as low dose rate seed brachytherapy for early prostate cancer, was inspiring.

Education & Training

Dr Miles formally trained for his Specialist Radaition Oncology qualifications over three years at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne, before completing a clinical Fellowship in 2009 and he worked there as a Consultant until 2011. Dr Miles then moved to Albury/Wodonga and the Murray Valley Radiation Oncology Centre, where he performed more than 400 patient consultations in less than twelve months, gained invaluable experience in the clinical management of all tumour streams and represented his organisation on the Comprehensive Cancer Care Taskforce Committee.

Dr Miles travelled to the United States in September, 2012 where he completed the Seattle Prostate Institute's world renowned "Ultra-sound Guided Transperineal Brachytherapy for Early Stage Prostate Cancer" Accreditation Course.

Inspired by the results of these pioneers, such as Professor John Blasko, who presented the Institute's attractive long term results, Wes is keen to collaborate with Urological surgeons in establishing a similar program and offering patients the full complement of services regarding treatment of Prostate Cancer - which is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australian men, and throughout the world, every year.

Committed to his own continuing education and that of other clinicians, nurses, radiotherapists, medical students, patients and community members, Wes has a proven track-record of presenting to and tutoring to all of those groups. He always has a number of upcoming clinical and community speaking events, which he is always happy to make time for. This year includes the 2012 ANZUS Urology State Meeting on October 26-27 and the Bendigo's 2012 Biggest Blokes Lunch on November 16th for Prostate Cancer Awareness.
